After its successful reopening with new décor and ambience, the Lounge + Wine Bar at McCrady’s will once again feature the work of a talented local artist. Photographer Tripp Smith presents “Barrier Islands,” a collection of stunning photographs that focus on the natural beauty of the Lowcountry. A free art topening reception was held on Friday, Sept. 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. where guests can meet the artist.
“Barrier Islands” is a series of black and white photographs Smith took of the coastal regions of the Southeast, which the artist came to appreciate while growing up in Charleston. Years after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in media studies from the University of South Carolina, Smith embarked on a cross-country expedition, during which he captured thousands of images of national parks. He then turned his respect and fascination with the natural world into a profession. His serene yet powerful photographs portray the struggle, breakdown and regeneration of life in nature.
“My images should feel pure, soothing, but exciting and lacking a moment in time,” Smith said. “I want my photos to expand the appreciation and need of conserving our environment. The challenge is to compose my subjects in a way to create the impact I feel when seeing a certain tree, tidal creek, or cloud formation. If I have caused my audience to feel that awe and passion, I have succeeded.”
“Barrier Islands” will be on display in the Lounge + Wine Bar at McCrady’s from Sept. 16 to Dec. 16. The work will be available for purchase both at the art show and during the three month display period. For more information, call (843) 577-0025 x1.
